Current Position

  • Assistant Professor of Physics, DePaul University, 2008 – Current

  • Physicist, X-Ray Science Division (7-ID), Argonne 2008
  • Assistant Physicist, X-Ray Science Division (7-ID), Argonne 2003 – 2008
  • Assistant Research Engineer, University of California, Davis, 2000 – 2003
  • Resident User, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, 2000 – 2003
  • Graduate Research Assistant, Laser Division, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, 1996 – 2000
  • Co-operative Education Student, Accelerator Systems Division, Advanced Photon Source, Argonne, 1992 – 1994

  • I have two major research programs in time-resolved x-ray science. Using high-resolution x-ray diffraction at 7-ID I am trying to understand the competing nonlinear processes semiconductors following intense laser excitation. I am also developing a new instrument at 18-ID (BioCAT) for nanosecond time-resolution SAXS from proteins in solution.
  • Ultrafast x-ray detectors and sources
  • Protein folding and dynamics
  • Ultrafast laser techniques

  • I have been associated with the APS as a student, user, or beamline scientist since 1992. Although most of my research is now based at the APS as an external user, I believe my early training as a laser and accelerator physicist will be particularly useful as the APS upgrade approaches. I have a nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between the facility, its staff, and its users. I also can represent the perspective of a non-R1 University faculty member and students (a growing class of users). I have worked at several beamlines at the APS and around the world, and built several new instruments spanning a wide variety of x-ray techniques. As a local user, I expect to attend meetings in person, and continue to frequently walk the storage ring floor.
